Instructions for using the Asynchronous AppleTalk™ desk accessory and the Intermail™ demonstration User package for calling in to the Sand Hill reactor:
1. This packed file contains all that you need to build an asynchronous AppleTalk system and connect to the reactor. (Macintosh, modem, phone, and batteries not included.) Move all three files into a System folder on a disk that has the latest System and Finder. Earlier versions are not guaranteed.
2. Use a desk accessory mover program to install the Async AppleTalk, AND the Intermail DA into the system file of the new disk. I believe that the Intermail DA suitcase may be removed, but leave the Intermail User file AND the AALAP DA suitcase IN THE SYSTEM FOLDER
3. Reboot your Mac with this new disk. You should see the Intermail User sign-on at the Welcome to Macintosh greeting.
4. Pull down the Async AppleTalk DA and select 'HANG UP'. Respond to the prompt that this will shut down AppleTalk - 'OK'.
5. Now connect to your modem to the Mac PRINTER port and type the following phone number into the Auto-dial window of the Async AppleTalk DA:
1-305-349-5710. (omit area code if you're local...
6. The DA will dial a Hayes compatible modem. If you don't have one, dial manually and on getting a connection, just select the START button on the DA.
IF YOU TRY TO USE A TERMINAL PROGRAM TO DIAL OUT THE PRINTER PORT, YOU WILL LIKELY NOT HAVE ANY LUCK. The program will recognize that AppleTalk has taken that port. etc. The VT52 desk accessory seems to be well behaved and will work on all flavors of Mac to dial out the printer port.
7. Pull down the Async AppleTalk DA again and select 1200 baud* and then 'START' You should see a message 'Asynch AppleTalk Installed' within 5 to 10 seconds. If not, click away the alert dialog, and retry by telling the AALAP DA to HANG UP again (not the modem) and then START.... It usually connects readily.
(* Note that we do have 2400 baud service, but you should call voice first)
8. Now, pull down the Intermail™ DA and sign in as 'Visitor' (without quotes and NO PASSWORD ). You should receive promptly a dialog that you have mail. This will be the most current info on the reactor and asynchronous AppleTalk.
9. You may address comments or criticism to Michael, and may even find others already signed on regardless of the time of day. We use this system to connect the four buildings that provide shelter and workspace in our very secluded hide-away.
10. Should you have trouble with the procedure, please call us at Sand Hill over our voice line 305-349-5960.
